Today, I’m writing to discuss Game Story Writing and its sources of inspiration. ✍️🎮

Game Story Writing

Game Story Writing ✍️

As game designers, the stories we create define the player’s emotional journey.

Inspiration for game writing can come from the most unexpected places.

As game designers and writers, we often pull ideas from

> our surroundings,

> personal experiences, and

> the media we consume.

But where exactly can we find inspiration for game story writing? 🤔

Here are some key sources:

📚 Books and Novels

Novels offer rich, immersive narratives that fuel incredible game ideas.

For example, Black Myth: Wukong draws inspiration from the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West, bringing its characters and themes to life in a vibrant gaming experience.

Personally, I’m currently writing a game inspired by a novel I read in my childhood. It’s amazing how some stories stick with you, waiting to be brought to life in new ways.

🎥 Movies and TV Shows

Visual storytelling sparks ideas for plot twists, character development, and world-building. The tension, mystery, or emotional depth in films can directly shape game narratives.

A great example is The Last of Us, which takes cues from post-apocalyptic films, creating a deeply emotional narrative about love and survival.

📜 History

Real-world events and historical figures provide endless material. The conflicts, triumphs, and tragedies of the past can inspire deeply engaging and impactful stories in games.

Games like Assassin’s Creed cleverly weave historical conflicts and characters into their narratives, allowing players to experience significant moments from the past.

💡 Personal Experiences

Sometimes, the most unique stories come from our own lives. Emotions, relationships, and personal journeys can form the foundation for narratives that truly resonate with players.

Celeste explores themes of mental health and personal struggle, inspired by the creator’s own experiences, making it a deeply relatable story.

🎮 Other Games

Playing other games can show us how to structure stories, develop character arcs, or even inspire us to put a unique twist on familiar mechanics.

Journey redefined storytelling in games with its wordless communication and emotional resonance, inspiring many developers to explore new narrative techniques.

Inspiration is everywhere.

As game designers, we have the opportunity to turn these stories into immersive experiences that connect with players on a deeper level. 🌟
